Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulb Recycling & Clean-Up Procedure

Upgrading your lighting from compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs to light emitting diode bulbs (LED) is one of the fastest ways to reduce your electric energy bill. LEDs are more energy efficient than CFLs.

If a CFL bulb is broken, go to the US EPA website to read the proper procedure for cleaning up the broken bulb. Fluorescent lights contain a small amount of mercury and the broken CFL bulb should be treated as a hazardous waste material. Follow the instructions carefully to ensure your safety and the safety of your family and pets.

CFL bulbs should never be placed into your trash. CFL bulbs can be recycled at the Wallingford Electric Division office at 100 John Street. There is a receptacle for this purpose immediately inside the front door. We ask that you please follow the procedure posted near the receptacle. CFL bulbs may also be recycled at local stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s.

Note: We CANNOT accept tubular fluorescent bulbs. Prepaid boxes to recycle tubular fluorescent bulbs are available for purchase online.
